Max file size: 50 MB
How to Use This Tool
- Upload your design - Drop your PDF file or click to browse. Works with any PDF up to 50MB.
- Click Mirror PDF - We'll flip your design horizontally (left becomes right).
- Print with laser printer - Use a laser printer or photocopier - inkjet won't work for heat transfer.
- Transfer to wood - Iron the pattern face-down onto your wood, then burn your design.
Why Mirror Your Wood Burning Pattern?
When using the heat transfer method for pyrography, you place your printed pattern face-down on the wood and apply heat. The toner transfers from the paper to the wood surface, but since it's flipped during transfer, your design will appear reversed.
This is critical for designs with text, letters, numbers, or directional imagery. By mirroring your PDF before printing, the final transferred image will be correctly oriented on your wood piece.
Pro Tip
The heat transfer method only works with laser printers or photocopiers - never inkjet. Laser toner is a heat-activated wax that releases onto wood when heated. For best results, use smooth, light-colored wood and apply firm, even pressure with your iron.
When to Mirror for Wood Burning
- Heat transfer method - Always mirror when using an iron or heat tool to transfer toner to wood.
- Acetone transfer - When using acetone to transfer laser-printed patterns, you need to mirror the image.
- Wax paper transfer - If printing on wax paper and transferring with heat, mirror your design.
- Burnishing transfer - When rubbing the back of printed paper with a burnishing tool, mirror the pattern.
When NOT to Mirror
- Graphite/carbon paper - When tracing through carbon paper, you don't need to mirror - trace as normal.
- Direct tracing - If you're tracing the pattern by hand while looking at it, no mirroring needed.
- Lightbox tracing - When using a lightbox to trace through the wood, keep the original orientation.
- Symmetrical designs - Mandalas and geometric patterns that look the same when flipped don't require mirroring.
Works with All Pyrography Tools
This tool works with patterns for any wood burning equipment including:
- Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool
- Razertip wood burning pens
- TRUArt Stage 1 and Stage 2
- Colwood wood burners
- Any variable temperature pyrography tool
Heat Transfer Tips for Wood Burning
- Sand your wood - Start with smooth, sanded wood (220+ grit). Rough surfaces won't transfer cleanly.
- Use laser printer only - Print your mirrored pattern with a laser printer or make a photocopy. Inkjet won't transfer.
- Position carefully - Tape one edge of the paper to the wood so it doesn't shift during transfer.
- Apply high heat - Use an iron on high (no steam) or a wood burning tool on low. Press firmly and evenly.
- Check progress - Carefully lift a corner to check if the toner has transferred before removing completely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to create an account?
No! This tool is completely free and requires no signup. Just upload, mirror, and download.
Is my file secure?
Yes. Your files are automatically deleted from our servers after 1 hour. We don't store, share, or analyze your designs.
Can I use an inkjet printer?
No, the heat transfer method requires a laser printer or photocopier. Inkjet ink is water-based and won't transfer with heat. Laser toner is a wax-based material that releases when heated.
What wood works best for pyrography?
Light-colored, smooth woods with minimal grain work best. Popular choices include basswood, birch, maple, and poplar. Avoid resinous woods like pine as they can cause uneven burning.
Can I use the acetone transfer method instead?
Yes! For acetone transfer, print your mirrored design with a laser printer, place it face-down on wood, and rub the back with an acetone-soaked cotton ball. The design will still be mirrored, so use this tool first.
My image editing software has a flip option. Should I use both?
No! Use either this tool OR your software's flip option, but not both. Mirroring twice will give you the original orientation, and your transferred pattern will be backwards.
Can I mirror an image file instead of PDF?
This tool is specifically for PDFs. If you have a JPG or PNG, you can convert it to PDF first using a free converter, or use an image editor to flip it horizontally.
