How to Use This Tool
- Upload your design - Drop your PDF file or click to browse. Works with any PDF up to 50MB.
- Click Mirror PDF - We'll flip your design horizontally (left becomes right).
- Download & Print - Print on thermal stencil paper using your stencil printer.
- Transfer to skin - Apply the stencil to prepped skin using standard techniques.
Why Mirror Your Tattoo Stencil?
When you print a tattoo stencil on thermal transfer paper, the design is placed face-down onto the skin. When you peel away the paper, the image transfers in reverse. If you don't mirror first, text and directional elements will appear backwards on the skin.
This is critical for designs with:
- Letters, words, or quotes
- Numbers and dates
- Asymmetrical symbols or logos
- Portraits or faces
- Directional arrows or imagery
Pro Tip
Always mirror (flip horizontally) your stencil before printing or tracing. If you skip this, the design will show up backwards on the skin. Do a test print on regular paper and hold it up to a mirror to verify.
When to Mirror Your Stencil
- Thermal stencil printers - Brother PocketJet, Phomemo M08F, and similar thermal printers require mirrored images.
- Spirit thermal paper - Classic purple carbon stencil paper transfers in reverse.
- Hectograph paper - Manual tracing onto hectograph sheets also requires mirroring.
- Freehand stencils - If you're tracing directly onto transfer paper, mirror the source image first.
When NOT to Mirror
- Symmetrical designs - If your design looks identical when flipped (mandalas, geometric patterns), mirroring is optional.
- Printer auto-mirror enabled - Some stencil printers have a built-in mirror option. Use one or the other, not both.
- Direct-view references - If you're using the printout as a visual reference only (not for transfer), don't mirror.

- Position carefully - Place the stencil face-down and press firmly without sliding.
- Peel slowly - Remove the paper carefully to avoid smudging.
- Let it dry - Wait for the stencil to fully dry before beginning the tattoo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to create an account?
No! This tool is completely free and requires no signup. Just upload, mirror, and download.
Is my file secure?
Yes. Your files are automatically deleted from our servers after 1 hour. We don't store, share, or analyze your designs.
Can I mirror an image file instead of PDF?
This tool is specifically for PDFs. If you have a JPG or PNG, you can convert it to PDF first using a free converter, or use an image editing tool to flip it.
My stencil printer has a mirror option. Should I use both?
No! Use either this tool OR your printer's mirror setting, but not both. Mirroring twice will give you the original (non-mirrored) result, and your stencil will appear backwards on skin.
Why is my stencil coming out backwards?
If your design appears reversed on skin, you likely forgot to mirror before printing (or mirrored twice). Use this tool to flip your PDF, then print without any additional mirror settings in your printer driver.
Does this work for stick and poke tattoos?
Yes! Whether you're doing machine tattoos or hand-poke/stick-and-poke, the stencil transfer process is the same. Mirror your design so it appears correctly on skin.
Can I use this for temporary tattoo transfers?
Yes, this tool works for any transfer method where the design is applied face-down, including temporary tattoo paper and inkjet tattoo paper.
